3 spectacular car routes through Portugal

There are many tourist tours that can be done in the Portuguese country. But here We propose three routes by car through Portugal. Three routes through its most important places, and also distributed geographically. That is to say, a route to the north, another one through the center visiting Lisbon, and a last one through the south, crossing its most tourist region: the Algarve. You choose!

Route through the north of Portugal

Starting practically from the Portuguese-Spanish border We propose this route to travel from the town of Valença do Minho to Porto, passing through the monumental cities of Braga and Guimaraes.

Valença do Minho is an excellent place to shop of some of Portugal's emblematic textile products, its bath and bed linen. But not only that, you also have to admire its stamp on the banks of the Miño, crowned by its large castle in the upper part.

Guimaraes Castle - Sergey Peterman

The next point is Braga, the spiritual capital of the country due to its cathedral or the sanctuary of Bom Jesus. And then comes Guimaraes, whose historic center and some of its monuments are declared World Heritage by Unesco.

And the end of these 250 kilometers is Porto, the city where the Duero flows into the Atlantic. Porto is by itself a good destination for a vacation, to see all its heritage with the Sé and the church of the Clérigos in front, or to stroll through its neighborhood of the Ribeira, and of course to taste its star product, the wines that bear the name of Porto all over the world.

"He who is accustomed to travel knows that it is always necessary to leave one day."

-Paulo Coelho-

Tagus Route for Portugal

On this route we will travel through the center of the country, also starting at the border with Spain, in this case very close to the Extremadura city of Mérida. In fact, our tour is as old as that city, since It is based on the old Roman road that reached Lisbon.

That is, our destination is the fascinating capital of Portugal, but first we will discover landscapes full of natural history and value. For example, in Castelo Branco we will see its impressive castle. Somewhat later we will visit the Natural Reserve of Paul do Boquilobo, located at the point where the waters of the Almonda River flow into the Tagus.

As a prelude to the capital, we will have to take time to take a walk through the flirtatious city of Santarem. Its historic center is planted with beautiful Gothic buildings.

And finally, after just over 200 kilometers of travel we will arrive in Lisbon. The capital requires a long vacation to devote a day to each of its neighborhoods of interest: Alfama, Chiado, Baixa, Barrio Alto, Belém ...

Route through the Algarve

We finish these proposals for routes through Portugal proposing a trip to Algarve, possibly the most exploited tourist region in the country. And it is not surprising knowing the good weather of southern Portugal and also the wonderful beaches that are scattered in this area.

Castelejo Beach - Pawel Kazmierczak

Among them the most famous beaches are those found in Lagos. Places where the bathing area is located in very eroded rock environments and of great beauty. Something that happens on the beaches of Benajil, Camilo, Marinha or in the charming town of Carvoiero. Without doubt the most spectacular of Portugal.

But before getting there we have to stop in Tavira, a monumental population very close to the border with Spain in the province of Huelva. But it is not the only point of great heritage interest on this route, you must also visit Sagres and the old nautical school of Enrique el Navegante, which is very close to the mythical windy cape of San Vicente, point and end of this tour Portugal.
